Yen Bai province: Mu Cang Chai district recognized with four national intangible cultural heritage titles
Mu Cang Chai District ( Yen Bai province) is home to 39 tangible cultural heritages and 142 intangible cultural heritages listed in inventory. The district’s iconic terraced rice fields are recognized as a National Special Relic, and the Khau Pha Guerrilla Team Site is classified as a National Historical Relic.

Additionally, four intangible cultural heritages of the district have been officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism as part of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list. These include the New Rice Celebration of the Hmong people, the Hmong Khen (panpipe) Art, the wax-resist decorative art on fabric, and the Khen performance of the Hmong people.
To preserve and promote the value of its cultural heritage, Mu Cang Chai District has developed tourism products closely tied to its cultural traditions and local customs. These include spiritual and cultural tourism featuring the Khau Pha Pass Historical Relic Complex and tours of the Lao Chai Ancient Rock Field Historical Site. The district has also revived and re-enacted traditional events such as the Hmong Khèn Dance Festival and Hmong weddings to cater to tourists seeking cultural exploration. Additionally, the district has established the Management Board for the National Special Relic of Mu Cang Chai’s Terraced Fields. These efforts have helped create unique tourism experiences, attracting visitors and realizing the goal of “Transforming heritage into assets,” ultimately improving the livelihoods of people in this mountainous region.
