(TITC) – When mentioning Cao Bang, many immediately think of the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall or the mysterious Nguom Ngao Cave. Yet, this borderland region also harbors a unique natural treasure: Mat Than Mountain, located within the Thang Hen Lake complex in the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark. With its spectacular and mysterious charm, the mountain has become an increasingly popular destination for travellers everywhere.

Mat Than Mountain is also known as Thung Mountain, but the more familiar and striking name “Mat Than”, meaning “Divine Eye”, captures the imagination of visitors. Rising approximately 650 meters above sea level, the limestone mountain features a circular hole ten of metres wide in its midst, resembling a giant eye gazing down over Cao Bang. Local people say this mysterious “eye” has existed for millions of years, formed through natural weathering processes. This extraordinary feature makes Mat Than Mountain truly one of a kind, not only in Vietnam but also rare worldwide.
A Scenic Masterpiece of Nature
The landscape surrounding Mat Than Mountain is like a painting. The mountain sits in a vast valley, embraced by Thang Hen Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in northern Vietnam’s mountainous region. Its clear, calm waters reflect the rugged peaks like a perfect mirror. On misty days, the scenery transforms into a dreamlike, ethereal landscape, leaving every visitor in awe.
