The return of migratory birds each season is a testament to the pristine living environment of Thac Ba Lake
This isn’t the first time the islands of Thac Ba Lake have welcomed birds to nest. Years ago, a large island hosted numerous storks during the migration season. Photographer Thanh Mien captured timeless moments from that period, which later became one of the iconic photographs representing Yen Bai Province, showcasing the tourism potential of Thac Ba Lake to both domestic and international audiences.
Known as the “Ha Long of the Mountains,” Thac Ba Lake, a national historic and scenic site, spans over 19,000 hectares of water surface, featuring more than 1,300 islands of various sizes, surrounded by majestic mountain ranges and fascinating caves. This rich natural ecosystem boasts incredible biodiversity.
Recognizing the immense value of Thac Ba Lake, in recent years, Yen Bai Province and Yen Binh District have prioritized the protection of the ecological environment and biodiversity. These efforts are seen as strategic and urgent actions to meet current and sustainable development goals. Numerous programs and projects have been launched to preserve, enhance, and utilize the strengths of Thac Ba Lake.
The sight of migratory flocks returning each season is a testament to the pristine and unspoiled wilderness of Thac Ba Lake and reflects the local commitment to environmental preservation.
From September to April, the migratory bird season unfolds, making this a perfect time to witness the serene beauty of Thac Ba Lake. Thousands of birds take to the skies, soaring across the crystal-clear waters, bathed in golden sunlight. The vibrant green of the sky, lake, and forested islands, contrasted with the white wings of the egrets, creates a captivating scene of “returning flocks” that leaves a lasting impression.
In response, Yen Binh District actively encourages local residents to refrain from hunting, trapping, or capturing wild and migratory birds. The district also coordinates with relevant agencies to intensify patrols and monitoring in key areas where wild bird hunting is common. These efforts aim to preserve and enhance the area’s biodiversity, ensuring the balance of the natural ecosystem while promoting local tourism development.
