Lung Tam brocade weaving village of Mong people in Ha Giang

(TITC) – Lung Tam Linen Cooperative in Lung Tam commune, Quan Ba District, Ha Giang Province preserves the brocade weaving tradition of the Mong people on the Ha Giang Stone Plateau. Local people still keep the traditional linen weaving profession with natural materials and manual processes.

Both domestic and foreign tourists love to visit Lung Tam linen weaving village in the rocky plateau

Weaving linen is a traditional profession of many Mong families in Lung Tam. In the past, linen was only made to serve the needs of the family. Because the process of making products was completely manual, productivity was not high.

Since 2001, Lung Tam Linen Cooperative was established in order to preserve and develop unique cultural features, improving income for local people. It also became a well known destination by many domestic and foreign tourists.

Here, visitors can learn about the linen weaving process, and directly experience the steps of creating a piece of fabric.

The finished flax product must go through 41 stages, from growing flax, harvesting, peeling, pounding, spinning, cooking, and building the loom…

The Mong people still weave cloth by hand using looms. The weaving process is usually undertaken by experienced older artisans who can handle broken or damaged threads..

The finished woven fabric is placed between a stone slab and a wooden pillar. The worker stands on the stone slab and rolls it back and forth until the entire surface of the fabric is flattened, soft and smooth. Then it is soaked in wood ash for a week to whiten it and then dries. A beautiful linen fabric must have even, white and smooth threads. Linen is durable and absorbs moisture, so it feels cool when worn

The cooperative also had a shop to introduce and sell products to visitors

Products from Lung Tam Line Cooperative are clothes, handbags, wallets, etc. These products are made entirely of linen and are woven entirely by hand using traditional methods
