Hoa Binh ethnic groups’ costume showcased

Costumes of ethnic groups in the northern province of Hoa Binh were showcased at the Hoa Binh square in Hoa Binh city on November 17 evening as part of the Hoa Binh province’s Cultural and Tourism Week.

The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Hoa Binh provincial People’s Committee and head of the organising board for the Cultural and Tourism Week Nguyen Van Toan, leaders of local departments, districts, Hoa Binh City, local residents and tourists.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Director of the province’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Quach Thi Kieu highlighted Hoa Binh’s rich historical and cultural traditions.

It is home to a diverse community of ethnic minorities including Muong, Kinh, Thai, Tay, Dao, and Mong ethnic groups. Each group possesses unique cultural traits, beliefs, and traditional practices, contributing to a vibrant tapestry of diversity.

She said costume is the traditional heritage with easily recognisable characteristics of each ethnic group, showing their artistic and historical values. Each ethnic community has its own style of dresses, which varies by gender, age, and social status. The decorative arts found in these costumes are diverse, reflecting unique artistic styles and techniques. These garments serve as powerful symbols of each group’s cultural identity.

She emphasised the importance of promoting and showcasing the unique values of traditional costumes to both domestic and international tourists.

The Hoa Binh Cultural and Tourism Week 2024 aims to inspire pride and appreciation for the valuable cultural heritage of each ethnic group.

This event also provides a unique cultural space for artisans, artists, and performers from the six main ethnic groups in the province to share experiences in preserving and promoting traditional culture, fostering solidarity, and building a healthy and progressive cultural lifestyle. Additionally, it aims to boost the province’s tourism development.

A performance at the event

With the theme “Patterns of the Muong Land,” the showcase is one of six main activities of the cultural and tourism week, aimed at preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the ethnic groups while enhancing the visibility of the province’s tourism potential and the hospitality of its people.

The costumes presented were sponsored by talented designers such as Quynh Hoa and Tuan Anh, along with the ethnic garment workshop Hong Thom in Hoa Binh City.

During the event, over 120 performers, technicians, and choreographers showcased costumes in a sequence representing the Muong, Thai, Dao, Tay, Mong, and Kinh ethnic groups. The performances combined music and visuals, featuring dances, songs, and folk games, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.

The culture, people, and natural landscapes of the Muong region were also celebrated through the costume presentations. The resilience and spirit of the local people have contributed to a rich cultural heritage encompassing the Muong, Thai, Tay, Dao, Mong, and Kinh ethnicities.

This showcase also helped to promote Hoa Binh as a safe, friendly, and impressive travel destination.
