The newly discovered plant species is of great significance, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Truong Son mountain range in North Central Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Truong Quang Trung, Director of Dakrong Nature Reserve, has recently announced the discovery of a new plant species from the Begoniaceae family, Begonia laxiflora, in the evergreen forests of the Dakrong Nature Reserve, Quang Tri Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discovery was made by scientists from the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), the Forest Inventory and Planning Institute, and Dakrong Nature Reserve, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This new species is believed to be endemic to Vietnam, marking a significant contribution to the biodiversity of the Truong Son mountain range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Opaque Begonia thrives on granite slopes near streams and is characterized by its long inflorescences and smooth, glabrous fruit capsules, distinguishing it from other Begonias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Trung, the discovery of the new plant species underscores Dakrong Nature Reserve\u2019s long-standing commitment to conserving and enhancing biodiversity in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe reserve is a convergence point for Vietnam\u2019s major plant species. With proper investment, we believe the number of new species available for scientific research will grow significantly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are committed to protecting Vietnam\u2019s rare plant species and unique ecosystems, actively contributing to the preservation of our natural heritage for future generations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nick Cox, Director of the Biodiversity Conservation Component at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), said that it is likely that many newer plant and animal species will be discovered in the Truong Son mountain range in the coming years. \u201cIt is crucial that these forests continue to be protected, supported by the commitment of the Vietnamese government and people, along with national and international organizations dedicated to biodiversity conservation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
